What is "Apples of Gold"?

Apples of Gold is a Bible study program originally conceived and authored by Betty Huizenga.

This 7-week Bible study and training ministry is based on the Titus 2:3-5 command that the older women “teach what is good … and urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.” This passage is the cornerstone of Prestoncrest’s desire to provide a nurturing, mentoring program for young women.

Since 2003, this program has held annually on Thursday evenings in March and April. Each Thursday evening begins with appetizers, followed by a demonstration focusing on cooking tips and hospitality. Then while the hosts/cooking mentors finish preparing the meal, the participants enjoy a Bible study taught by a different teaching mentor each week. The Bible lessons concentrate on character traits of effective Christian women, husband/wife relationships, family dynamics and hospitality. The evening concludes with a delicious meal and "table topics." Husbands are invited to attend with their wives at the final gathering for a panel discussion by the teacher’s husbands and a luau.

The class is limited to 10 young women each year that are able to commit to the series of classes. Current teachers and hosts include wives of a few of our ministers, elders, and long-time members. This ministry has fostered numerous friendships between older and younger families as well as giving over 100 younger women a head start on both the practical and the spiritual aspects of family life.
