Update as of 9/25/20
The devastation on the coast of Texas and Louisiana is overwhelming. Thousands of families are still trying to get back to their homes. SGSO is working to help families and communities in need and is partnering with several other CoC Disaster Relief Organizations. The first relief efforts are starting in the towns of Sulphur and Lake Charles, Louisiana, working with the Maplewood Church of Christ. Efforts include cleanup, distributing supplies, and serving home-cooked meals to the community and the National Guard working in the area. Volunteers are needed, and positions include cooks, cook assistants, those with carpentry skills, and those that can help clear debris, etc. Efforts in Mississippi and Alabama are also on the horizon - supplies and building materials are needed in those areas as well. Prayers, volunteers, and financial support are all needed to make these efforts happen!
Stay informed by visiting www.SGSO.org any time. Volunteers can sign up there or by calling Jim Burrow (214-755-6303) or Mark Maynard (972-997-1836).
Please be in prayer for those whose lives have been turned upside down. May the Lord bless all these efforts as we seek to glorify Him by serving the “least of these.” Matt 25:31-46
Update as of 8/30/20
Hurricane Laura swept ashore as one of the most powerful storms to hit the U.S. The eye came ashore at the Louisiana/ Texas border, destroying many communities in its wake. As always, SGSO stands ready to help.
Serving God by Serving Others is an organization with strong ties to Prestoncrest. The group's leadership, plus many of the workers and volunteers are Prestoncrest members. SGSO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to emergency disaster relief in the event of a natural or man-made disaster; such as tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, floods, or earthquakes. Their mission is to provide practical aid and support to disaster victims as quickly and efficiently as possible. Members from several DFW area churches have participated in the organization of SGSO and assisted in bringing structure to the organization. SGSO’s organizational goal is to help churches and congregations reach out and provide aid swiftly and more efficiently following a disaster.
SGSO is working on responding and sending volunteers to help in the clean-up, which will continue in the weeks and months ahead when these communities start rebuilding. They will be able to pinpoint exact locations for response as water begins to recede and Disaster Relief groups are allowed in. In the meantime, SGSO is contacting churches and individuals in the area to assess the needs and how we can best serve.
SGSO seeks to serve a representative of the Lord’s people to those who have lost everything. In addition to helping with cleanup and rebuilding, SGSO volunteers focus on encouraging and sharing the love of Christ.
The needs will be great and will last for several months. Please pray for those affected by this terrible storm and the thousads of first responders working in the area for the next several months.
Update as of 9/2/20
Mark Maynard, Co-Director of SGSO, has been in Lake Charles, Louisiana and surrounding areas and sent this report on the devastation in southeast Texas and south Louisiana from Hurricane Laura:
Hurricane Laura has cut an enormous area of damage along the coast and 100 miles inland. SGSO is responding and has determined from in person damage assessment that our response should be centered where the eye landed in Sulphur/ Lake Charles Louisiana. We are calling on your assistance with prayers, volunteer service and donations. Work locations at the Enterprise Blvd Church of Christ in Lake Charles and Maplewood Church of Christ in Sulphur will be in place by September 4th. Our neighbors on the coast are returning a week later to homes damaged and communities devastated by "unsurvivable" winds and storm surge. They need your help and in person encouragement in the process of clean up and restoration of their lives. To volunteer, go to www.SGSO.org click on the Volunteer tab and we will follow up. Your donations will allow immediate needs to be met, which will allow people to return to their homes until the community power is restored over the next 30 days. We will be focusing on this work for an estimated 12-18 months to rebuild and restore lives. This is our opportunity to serve our God by serving others. God is good.
