Sunshine School is an educational program for children from 12 months through Pre-K located at Prestoncrest.
At Sunshine School we believe preschool is an important part in a child’s development where they can learn social skills and important foundations of academics. These skills are essential in preparing children to enter kindergarten and other educational opportunities. In addition to these skills, we also want to teach our students to love God’s Word, have a positive attitude, and to treat others with respect.
We strive to provide each student with an opportunity to gain independence through hands-on learning and a wide variety of learning styles and experiences.
Tuition and Enrollment
Enrollment begins each year in January. Children will be placed in a class based on their age as of September 1. Enrollment for Prestoncrest members and returning students begins January 9th, and enrollment opens to new families on January 23rd. Submissions before those dates will not be included on our rosters. To secure their spot, registrants need only to fill out the online enrollment form and turn in a check for the last month’s tuition and enrollment fee. Before school starts all students will need to have an Emergency Release and immunization records on file, which can be done at Meet the Teacher in September.
Should one of our age groups be filled to capacity, a waiting list is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Note that students entering the 3’s, 4’s, and Pre-K classes must be completely potty trained before they may begin.
|Tuition||Enrollment Fee*||Total Due at Enrollment|
|Nursery||$250 / month||$200||$450|
|2-4 Years Old||$225 / month||$200||$425|
|Pre-K||$300 / month||$225||$525|
*The Enrollment Fee covers all snacks and supplies for the school year and is only paid once per school year.
Tuition must be paid by the 1st of each month. Please make checks payable to Prestoncrest Church of Christ with “Sunshine School” in the memo line. Tuition is considered late after the 5th of each month, at which point a $25 late fee will be invoiced.

Curriculum, Classes & Teachers
Sunshine School takes great care to craft its curriculum and classes around the various needs of our students. Chapel and special classes like Music and Art are a few of things the students are engaged in. Learn more about Sunshine School’s curriculum, teachers, class sizes and more by clicking below.
Our curriculum is highly individualized to meet the needs of the children at their stage of development. Children spend time in different activities teaching them letter recognition and sounds, awareness of numbers and shapes, pre-reading and writing skills and sight word recognition. Our curriculum includes hands on activities, fine motor skill practice, social skill practice, imaginative play, and more. We have specific learning goals for each age level in our preschool and our teachers build their daily lessons with these goals in mind.
Children will have a monthly Bible verse as a part of Chapel. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” We believe children are never too young to learn scripture and develop a desire to learn God’s word.
Teachers and Class Size
Sunshine School is blessed to have a loving, caring group of women to serve as our team of teachers. Teachers in our Pre-K classes are all certified teachers, many of whom have teaching experience in public and private schools. We strive to keep our classes small so that children and families receive close, personal attention from the teacher. If you have questions about the student/teacher ratio for your child’s age group, please call our office.
We are always looking for wonderful teachers and substitutes! If you are interested in joining the Sunshine School Team, fill out an application and drop it by the office!
Schedules and Classes
Classes are conducted Mondays and Thursdays from 9 am to 2 pm. (Our Three Day Pre-K meets additionally on Tuesdays from 9 am - 2 pm). We do not accept children prior to 8:55 am. This enables our teachers and staff to prepare for their day. Children need to be picked up promptly at 2 pm. Many teachers have family obligations that require them to leave school in a timely manner.
A schedule of the day’s activities will be posted in each classroom and sent home at the beginning of the school year in each child’s folder. Naptime/quiet time is scheduled each day after lunch for our Nursery, 2’s, and 3’s. Our 4’s and PreK do not rest or nap.
Each class in the 2’s through Pre-K participate in the following activities:
During Chapel time, all of our classes meet together in the Big Backyard, a special room for children’s events. Children spend time singing together, as well as hearing a lesson from the Bible pertaining to the month’s virtue. Children end the time in prayer and practice their monthly memory verse as a group. Chapel is also a special time for our Chapel teacher to recognize individual birthdays and achievements.
Rhythm & Movement
Sunshine School is blessed to have a music teacher on our staff and Sunshine School students love their time in the class. During Music time, children are able to express themselves through singing and learning new songs as well as movement. Children are encouraged to experiment with age-appropriate musical instruments such as bells, rhythm sticks, drums and more.
Through hands-on activities, children learn various art techniques and explore art history. Every month, our art teacher follows a thematic curriculum to lead children to discover art through the use of different materials, textures, and mediums. Each child will come home with a monthly “art portfolio” to share with their families!
Policies and Procedures
What should my child bring to Sunshine School? What are lunches like? What is the illness policy? Can I come in to pick up/drop off my child? Answers to these questions and more are below.
Backpacks/Bags: All children need to have a backpack or bag that is large enough to hold a folder, which will be sent home every day with their papers and daily reports.
Clothing: Clothes that are easy to wash and sturdy shoes like tennis shoes are best for school. Please, no cowboy boots with pointed toes or high heeled “dress up” shoes. Both can potentially cause accidents. Please keep a change of clothes in a Ziploc bag in your child’s backpack in case of an accident, spills, etc. Also, be sure to send a jacket/coat on cold days. We have a covered, enclosed playground and we like to go outside even when it’s chilly!
Nap Mats: Children in our Nursery, 2’s and 3’s classes have a rest time after lunch. Parents need to provide a nap mat for 2’s and 3’s. Nursery children have cribs for their naps. Children are allowed to bring one item from home (pillow, stuffed animal, blanket, etc.) to help them rest. Nap mats are stored at Sunshine School and are sent home periodically to be washed.
A mid-morning snack is provided each day, but neither cups nor food for lunch are available. Please send either a drink for snack/lunch, or send a cup and we will fill it with water. Pack a lunch every day for your child that contains foods that do not require heating or refrigeration and can be eaten without assistance. (Nursery teachers do help children eat and they do have access to a microwave to warm bottles and meals.) Finger foods of all varieties work best.
A wonderful, sturdy lunchbox that is a favorite of our teachers and is easy for all ages to open is the easylunchboxes.com container. Their website provides lots of ideas for what to pack. You can purchase these any time from the Sunshine School office. We will also offer the lunchboxes at “Meet the Teacher Night”, and at our Fall & Spring programs.
Please keep sick children at home – this includes runny noses and bad coughs. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT COME TO SCHOOL UNTIL THEY HAVE BEEN FEVER FREE, AS WELL AS VOMIT/DIARRHEA FREE, FOR 24 HOURS. If a child is ill with a highly contagious illness (such as stomach viruses or HFM), we ask parents to let us know so that in addition to our normal cleaning, special care can be taken to disinfect toys and furniture in the classroom. If a child becomes ill at school, parents will be contacted to pick him/her up as quickly as possible.
Parties and Birthdays
Class Parties: Parents in each class will be asked to organize three classroom parties during the year. We ask for parent volunteers to be “Room Moms” for each class and coordinate each event. These are simple, short, and fun parties that can include any combination of snacks, crafts, books, games, etc. The teachers, Pinterest, and fellow room moms are great resources for helping decide what to do for these fun events. Parents are very appreciated when they volunteer for these and other school-wide activities!
Birthdays: You are welcome to bring treats for the entire class to celebrate your child’s birthday at school. Please let your child’s teacher know in advance and provide paper goods if necessary. Please note that invitations to parties away from school cannot be distributed at school unless everyone in the class is invited.
Car Line and Parking
Car line (drop off & pickup in the north circle drive) begins the 2nd day of school. Parents of 2’s through PreK may use our carpool line, but we ask nursery parents to come inside for drop off and pickup.
Enter from Preston Road, and pull up as far as possible. There are 2 lanes to use, so the process goes very quickly! Drivers stay in their car and one of our teachers comes to unload the child(ren) and walk them into the building. We do NOT allow cell phone use in the carpool line. Unloading begins at 8:55 am. This allows our teachers plenty of time to prepare for a fun day of learning! We dismiss school and begin loading at 2:00 pm sharp. If you arrive after 2:10, you will be invoiced a late fee.
For pickup, be sure to always have your Sunshine School hang tag displayed from your rearview mirror. These are provided at the beginning of the year. Let us know if you need a replacement or additional tag.
You are welcome to come in the building each day to drop off and/or pick up your child. Please enter through the north doors. If you do come inside in the morning, please wait in the lobby until 8:55 and then take your child to class.
NOTE: No carpool line is available during Book Fair week. You will be notified when that week is coming up so you can be prepared.
Communication between parents and teachers is key to a great school experience! Teachers send home reports every day in a folder, along with schoolwork and notes about upcoming activities. Parents are asked to review and clean out their child’s folder before the next school day. Information about school activities is also emailed out as needed to keep everyone informed.
Should you need to talk to your child’s teacher or the director, please schedule a conference or contact us after regular school hours. A complete school directory with contact information for staff, directors, students, and teachers will be sent home after the school year begins.
Safety and Security
All doors to the building are locked during the school day. We lock the north doors after drop off and unlock them before pick up.
If someone other than parents will be picking up a child, please let us know their name and let them know that we will be checking their ID when they arrive.
We all know the weather in Texas is quite unpredictable. In the event of icy roads or inclement weather, check your radio or TV – if Richardson ISD is closed or has a delayed start time, Sunshine School will not meet.
